How to Prepare Your Books for Tax Season
By BusiB
Tax-season preparation is less about producing one report and more about making the year's records complete, traceable, and understandable to the person preparing the return.
Clean books do not determine every tax answer, but they can reduce avoidable questions and help a tax professional focus on decisions rather than reconstruction.
Reconcile the full year
Reconcile every bank and card account through year-end, including accounts opened or closed during the year. Review loan statements, payment processors, payroll reports, receivables, payables, and owner equity balances where applicable.
Identify rather than guess
Resolve unidentified deposits, uncategorized expenses, transfers, personal activity, and transactions posted to suspense accounts. Confirm that each item belongs to the correct entity and period. Ask your tax professional about uncertain treatment.
Organize supporting documents
Maintain statements, receipts, invoices, loan documents, closing statements, payroll forms, contractor information, and records for major purchases or sales. Your preparer may request additional documents based on the business and jurisdiction.
Send a deliberate handoff package
Ask the preparer for a current checklist and deadline. Provide reconciled financial reports, prior-year information, supporting schedules, and a concise list of unusual events. Tax-ready bookkeeping supports preparation; it does not guarantee a filing result or replace professional advice.
Put your books on the touch-it-once system.
